The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards seemed to raise the bar even with the ongoing pandemic. Initially set to be held at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, New York City, on August 30, for the first time since 2013, the starry event was hosted by actress, singer, and talk show personality Keke Palmer and brought a number of musicians and artists under one roof. Due to social distancing regulations amid Covid-19 pandemic, the show is taking place in front of “limited or no audience.”
As Lady Gaga came onto the stage, she won hearts with her blockbuster performance on ‘Rain On Me’. The pop icon performed for the first time in seven years. The ‘Bad Romance’ singer teased the performance on Instagram saying: “I’ve been at home dreaming of #Chromatica, and it’s finally time to take off for the first live performance.”
No sooner did she come onto the stage, a tweet from MTV VMAs read: “LOOK AT THIS CHROMATICA QUEEN @ladygaga!” Another tweet said: “YES @ladygaga I AM BOTH FREAKING OUT AND LOOKING AT YOU RN #VMAS.”
Twitter soon exploded with fan reactions. “You tripping if you think Lady Gaga was able to sing that well under a mask like that while doing a performance, there’s no way #VMAs,” one viewer posted and another wrote, “Beliebers go to sleep, if you still think Justin is going to win AOTY after that Lady Gaga’s performance you are just delusional.”
“Gaga’s vocals when she sang the “I can’t see my cry” lyrics in 911 holy f**king shit. Literally what heaven must sound like #VMAs,” one tweet read and another said, “Things Gaga and Ariana did? THAT (while wearing masks!).” One went on to say: “I’m a fan and I really love @ladygaga, she is one of the best artists in the world and I have listened to her songs since I was kid, congratulations for your perform at #VMAs queen, you deserve all the good things in the world, thanks for taking care of our girls!”

There were a couple of other tweets as well but they were focused on the alleged wardrobe malfunction Gaga had on stage. One fan wrote: “Gaga’s t*t slipping off her bra gave the perfect touch to the performance! #GagaVMAs #VMAs”
Another said, “Gaga gave so much that a boob almost popped out. My anxiety was through the roof! Ya’ll better clap your hands and stomp your motherf***king feet. #VMAs.”
Earlier in 2011, Gaga also performed at the VMAs and teamed up with Brian May for ‘Yoü and I’ and in 2009, she broke all records with ‘Poker Face’ and ‘Paparazzi’. Other performers for the night include BTS, Doja Cat, J Balvin, The Weeknd, Roddy Ricch, Maluma and CNCO.
