Six Paris St-Germain players tested positive for coronavirus last week and Mbappé’s result cast doubt on the start of his Ligue 1 season. 21-year-old Mbappé scored the only goal when France beat Sweden in the Nations League opener on Saturday.
He was cut off from his teammates on Monday and has since been sent home. France will face Croatia at Stade de France on Tuesday at 7.45 pm. BST. “His Covid-19 test conducted by UEFA on Monday morning revealed a positive result, he was separated from the team after receiving the results after training and returned home in the afternoon,” confirmed the French Football Association.
“Mbappé was tested before joining the squad. The result was negative like a test carried out on Wednesday at UEFA’s request for the match against Sweden,” he added.
The reigning PSG champion is expected to begin his title defense on Thursday at Racing Lens after having had an extended hiatus following their appearance in the Champions League final last month.
The Ligue 1 season has started, but the first match between Marseille and Saint-Etienne was postponed last month after four local players tested positive at Covid-19.
The league told clubs last week that the coronavirus treatment protocol meant more than three positive cases in one club would likely result in a postponement.
