Blue Alert issued in search for suspect after Rhome police officer shot in leg, Wise County sheriff says

Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin said residents living near Highway 287 and FM 407 should keep their doors locked.
WISE COUNTY, Texas – Updated after state officials posted a Blue Alert at 6:10 a.m. Monday morning.

County Sheriff Lane Akin predicts a Rhome police officer will be in good shape after Rhome was shot during a road stop Sunday night. Authorities issued a Blue Alert as they searched for the man they thought shot the officer.
The suspect, identified by police as 43-year-old Royce Wood, was suspected in a previous home raid in the area on Saturday, according to Akin.

Sheriff’s deputies and Rhome officers attempted to apprehend Wood in the area he had last seen, after receiving a tip near Highway 287. Wood returned to the area on a motorcycle with a woman.

Rhome police found Wood first and stopped the traffic. Wood got off his bike and started running. Akin chased the police on foot, and Wood responded to the officers, hitting one of them in the lower leg.
Then he ran to the bush. Akin said the Rhome police and Wise County Sheriff’s deputies are still looking for him.

Wood weighs about 200 pounds and is 6 feet tall and has green eyes. It is also a brown-bearded goat. He was most recently wearing a baseball cap, sunglasses, vest, green shirt, and shorts wrapped in a camouflage bandana, according to police.

The sheriff said the woman was in custody and that Rhome was a good officer.

“We are extremely happy. We are very happy that the officer is in good condition. We feel very good about his condition,” he said.

He also advised people living near Highway 287 and FM 407 to keep their doors locked.

According to a tweet from TMPA, Lance Wyatt, the district attorney for the Texas Municipal Police Association, responded to the shooting.

Lake Worth Police Chief J.T. Manuşagyan tweeted that he prayed for the officer on Sunday night.

“I pray for the injured officer, his family, and Rhome PD. I have known this man for nearly 20 years and during that time we had a lot of dinner and laughter together. Deliverance and justice come quickly and without further violence,” he said. Wrote.
Anyone with information about the incident and Wood’s whereabouts is urged to contact the Wise County Sheriff’s Office at 940-627-5971.
