SpaceX to build world’s most advanced rocket engine factory in Central Texas

CEO Elon Musk said SpaceX plans to build “the world’s most advanced rocket engine factory” in Central Texas to support the growing needs of Starship and Super Heavy.

If all goes according to plan, the plant could be the tallest rocket factory to turn off hundreds of Raptor engines every year to send them off to equip a large interplanetary fleet and superheavy amplifiers on Earth. Earth’s orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond.

Musk announced his plans for a private Raptor engine factory on July 10, shortly after demonstrating an impressive portion of at least ten skilled Raptor engines staged at SpaceX’s production tent at Boca Chica Starship. Just three days after this photo, SpaceX placed three Raptor engines on the prototype of the first functional Super Heavy amplifier, which can probably all be seen in the July 10 family photo.

A day later, Musk determined that SpaceX had finally decided on a crucial aspect of the Super Heavy design, and that the operation would be equipped with 33 more or less identical Raptor engines at the end of the Starship amplifiers. Following another surprise announced by Musk earlier this month, this means that both two-stage Starship cars will need 39 to 42 Raptor engines – 36-39 at sea level options and three vacuum-optimized engines with larger nozzles.

While the Raptor’s current design isn’t there, Musk says SpaceX will launch an improved Raptor 2 engine in the not-too-distant future, increasing the maximum thrust to 230 tons (~ 510,000 lbf). In addition to removing the few structural parts needed to vibrate the engine in the 20 Amplifier Raptor, every engine in the Starship – except for the 3-6 vacuum option – will be the same.

Musk said the company’s new state-of-the-art SpaceX plant, located at the company’s largest McGregor rocket development and testing facility in Texas, will eventually produce between 800 and 1,000 Raptor 2 engines a year. The Raptor Vacuum production will remain at SpaceX’s headquarters in Hawthorne, California, while working on mysterious “new, experimental designs.” Under the new paradigm developed by Musk, Raptor will represent SpaceX’s Merlin engine family for more than a decade, consisting of two common sea-level and vacuum variants (Merlin 1 and Merlin Vacuum).

With only one high-volume variant required, Raptor 2 production can be extremely efficient and easily surpasses the production of other large liquid engines, which have historically completed 800-1000 engines per year. Technically, at the height of the 1970s and 1980s, the Soviet Union produced hundreds of R7 (Soyuz) amplifiers a year, with each R7 / Soyuz amplifier producing more than 1,000 engines a year, counting several different engine types. However, the annual production of a single variant of any other large liquid rocket engine in history did not come close to Musk’s goals for SpaceX’s Raptor 2 factory.
