Complex passwords containing letters, numbers and special characters are ‘daft’… just use three random words instead as they’re harder to crack, say Government spy chiefs

We’ve all been there – you made an online password you couldn’t crack… but forgot it.

Government spy chiefs have now warned that complex passwords made up of letters, numbers and special characters are “stupid”.

Instead, they suggest choosing three random words to secure your internet accounts.

Dr Ian Levy, technical director of the National Center for Cyber Security (NCSC), said: “Traditional password suggestions that tell us to remember more than one complex password are nonsense.

There are several good reasons why we decided to approach three words at random – not least because they create passwords that are both strong and easy to remember.

“By following this advice, people will be less vulnerable to cybercriminals.”

The NCSC said hackers are smart about typical password methods, like changing the letter ‘o’ to ‘0’.

Such techniques actually “result in the creation of more predictable passwords,” the agency said.

Combining three random words to generate a key can make code cracking algorithms harder to detect.
