Samsung on Wednesday unveiled two new phones with folding screens, including a model priced under $1,000 for the first time. It shows how Samsung works and how it has developed screen folding technology, which is a hard start to make the form factor more important to smartphones
The $999 Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G and $1799 Galaxy Z Fold 3 5G are similar to other folding phones Samsung has released in recent years. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 is a small square with a pocket inside that opens to accommodate a 6.7-inch display. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a slim phone that opens like a book to open up a tablet-sized 7.6-inch screen.
Samsung will generally launch new high-end phones in August, including folding screens. It gives Apple a chance to launch its latest flagships before their new iPhones go on sale in September.
While Huawei’s share continued to fall, Samsung and Apple were two of the world’s largest phone makers. According to Canalys, Chinese phone maker Xiaomi has grown significantly, surpassing Apple. Apple has a dominant share in the United States, where most people own an iPhone or Samsung phone, but Samsung’s supplies share is on the rise, according to recent figures from Counterpoint Research.
While Google hasn’t been interested in its phones in the past, it will soon introduce Pixel 6, Google’s new flagship phone developed to re-enter the premium phone market.
Here’s what you need to know about Samsung’s new phones:
Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G and Galaxy Z Fold 3 5G
Samsung’s first Galaxy Fold caused Samsung’s release to be delayed for several months after early models sent to reviewers were cracked. The company has since worked to help make screens and folds more durable.
This year’s models are the first to be water resistant. For example, Samsung says don’t worry about getting damaged in the rain. Both phones have a new layer that is 80% more durable than previous folding screens, new stronger aluminum frames and Corning glass that is more resistant to scratches and drip damage.
This is also the first time Samsung has introduced the S Pen to folding phones. The more expensive Galaxy Z Fold 3 5G will support a special version of the pen that automatically slides over the body of the pen and can protect the phone screen from scratches. Among other things, the S Pen can be used to take notes, sign documents and sketch on the phone.
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is also the first phone in the United States to have a camera hidden under the home screen. This means you don’t see any small cutouts anywhere on the screen. Instead, the camera can see the pixels above for selfie pictures. The phone has three cameras on the back for wide, ultra-wide and zoom images, and a fifth camera on the front.
The more affordable Galaxy Z Flip 3 has a few improvements.
The external display is now 4 times larger than the latest model and can display more information such as your calendar, weather and more. The folding screen has a higher refresh rate than previous models, making things like browsing websites smoother. The phone also has stereo speakers.
There are three cameras on the back, two for selfies, and there are some enhanced portrait mode features originally introduced in the latest Galaxy S21 phones.
Samsung will accept orders for the new phones starting Wednesday and ship them on August 27.
Galaxy Watch 4
Finally, Google and Samsung are working on a new app that was released on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic to make the Apple Watch better.
The app helps fill in some of the gaps Samsung has lost in previous devices such as Google Maps, Google Pay, Messages, and other popular smartwatch apps. Samsung says the new models offer better sleep tracking and can measure skeletal muscle mass, basal metabolic rate, body water, and body fat percentage.
The aluminum Galaxy Watch starts at $4,249, while the steel-framed and leather-clad Galaxy Watch Classic starts at $349. The watches will go on sale on August 27.
